Component 2 Essay

Films can be digitally advertised on social media platforms such as Youtube, Instagram, and various corners of the Internet. This has revolutionized the way in which films can be marketed and therefore greatly affected the potential profit margin they can generate. As technology takes the lead in this day in age, almost every distribution process is carried out digitally from film screenings to digital streaming. This impacts the profit cinemas can make from film screening, but does make film screening much more easier and convenient to view content than ever before. From this, film and streaming companies can garner more sales. Digital distribution largely affects the marketing and consumption of media products in the film industry to the extent where most films undergo distribution to a streaming service on top, resulting in more profit for production companies.

One case of a film practicing digital distribution, was the 2017 film was Beauty and the Beast, made by Walt Disney Pictures. Released both globally and domestically on March 17 of said year with no prior ‘Thursday Preview’ the film grossed approximately 1.3 billion world wide. Such a profit could not have been reached without digital distribution. The processes of digital distribution has allowed for global participation in the direct consumption of this film. As well as native territory, many people may experience circumstances where they cannot physically buy a ticket at the box office. Beauty and the Beast was Released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on June 6, 2017. Largely in favor of those with up to date media viewing platforms, the movie was also distributed to Netflix and On demand. Netflix with a growing subscriber count each year now with 182.8 million, making it one of the world's largest entertainment services, has added to the film's profits along with other popular streaming services where it was circulated. The distribution of this film has directly affected media marketing. One form was through social media including platforms such as Twitter. Under the social media handle “@beourguest” the film has created its own verified account to take part in promotion of the film, featuring teasers and clips prior to the release of the film. With over 142.8 thousand followers, many of which are actors of the film and large media corporations, this leaves room for cross promotion across other accounts associated with the film. It has even converged with twitter to make available specialized stickers promoting the film to its approximate 330 million monthly users.

Digital distributions as though seen on opposite spectrums with box office, actually make box office screening possible. Most of the films which are screened in theaters are delivered digitally. Entire films can be delivered to desired screens in seconds with the power of a simple internet connection. Digital distribution meant that films such as Spider-man Homecoming could be sent to theaters in forms of 2D,3D and IMAX format far and wide. It grossed $334,201,140 at domestic box office and $545,965,210 internationally. Its success can notably be awarded to the approach in which Marvel derived their marketing strategies based on their distribution tactics, reinforcing the idea that digital distribution largely does impact marketing and consumption of media products in the film industry. Marvel decided on releasing merchandise before the release of the movie, a very common marketing tactic, in order to create hype. Spider-man Homecoming’s market team used toys and other products as a way to get younger children to want to watch the movie. Sometimes this needs to be done because children may be too young to have developed a love for marvel or movies in general. By associating their toys with a movie they garner interest in seeing it. For older fans, the team also created a Spiderman game for the ps4 to add onto the film's anticipation. Mixing the use of marketing and partnering with companies, for example Cinnamon toast crunch which featured a prize promoting the movie inside, the hype had been created and the movie had a huge premier. It was released worldwide to the most possible cities for the largest profit possible. Once its time in box office was done, Spider-man homecoming was released onto xfinity stream and various other streaming sites. This equals more profit for the streaming services and production companies. However, for some movies that do not encounter much of a hype, many people choose to wait for the digital release which has negatively affected many theaters across the country and certainly other parts of the world.

In 2019, film studios produced several blockbusters including Disney's Avengers: Endgame. Its April release, grossed $2.8 billion worldwide. That placed it just ahead of the $2.79 billion created by Avatar in 2009 to make it the highest-grossing film ever. But, even with Endgame and other Disney films at the global box office producing more than $1 billion, the industry's cumulative domestic gross of $11.45 billion from 2019 is projected to fall short of the previous year’s record of $11.88 billion. Many in the film industry expect a pattern to continue as movie producers increasingly are allowing streaming services to release their films, which otherwise would have increased profit made at box office. One said streaming service is Disney+, a subscription video on-demand streaming service launched November 12, 2019. That same day, a Lady and the Tramp remake was present on the service, becoming the first Disney remake to forgo a theatrical release in favor of on-demand streaming. The streaming service has continued to do this another number of times, denying box office potential and adding to the already 3.8% box office shortfall.

Digital distribution has largely affected the marketing and consumption of films to the extent where most highest grossing films undergo a digital distribution. It has altered the way individuals interact with marketing and obtain their digital media. For the general public, this has created an incredibly convenient form of viewing film. On demand streaming likely has grown popular amongst them because it is easily adaptable to one's life. A movie could be streamed at any point in time an individual chooses to do so for a much longer time that any theater would allow for, as long as the streaming service does not remove it. Still, it offers a much larger window for viewing than box office ever has. This will continue to plunge sales at box office, however production companies are indulging in a new age economic opportunity. Individuals are more willing to pay to stream their movies at home than view them elsewhere which has proved to create even profit for them.

Re-edit

Today is March 20, 2020. Today we re-edited our film. For the most part it was close to being complete. However some vital parts were missing. We found we still had some titles that had gone missing. We went back through the requirements and checked off the titles did have and inserted the ones we didn’t. This was all done from home. Each of us collaborated online. We each also overlooked the film as we continued editing. Overlooking helped us spot choppiness. We found shots which could be shortened or placed in a slightly different manner. The goal was to improve the flow of the film. We wanted to overlook it til it was closest to perfect as we could get it. There was some error with the audio where when we voiced over the video it did not match the film. For this we had to detach the audio and reposition it correctly. After going through the video each time there were less visible mistakes. We also edited the qualities of our font. At first it wasn’t the easiest to read. We made it bigger and more clearer for ease in reading. It also went more with the film.

Reshoot

Today is March 20th, 2020. We are amidst the corona virus epidemic. Although this taken away extra time from our filming it has dedicated more time towards editing. The Corona virus has caused many jobs and school to shut down all over the country. So being that most of us are not going to school and working, we have more time to dedicate to our assignment. Also considering that we are supposed to keep in self isolation my group members and I called and collaborated on editing instead of having to meet up in person. We edited based off of our critique we received from the peer review. So a few days ago when conditions weren’t as bad we all met up and reshot some scenes. We found that there was things which could be improved upon involving Darren and I’s scenes. It was pointed out to us that the lighting and camera quality was not the best. Darren did film part of his scene in a dimly lit closet. It wasn’t the worst lighting but wasn’t the best. My lighting also was not good. In my room I don’t have a stable light that is attached to the ceiling. I have other sources of light like my lamps and the natural light from outside. This has affected the appearance of the shot. So do to this we went over to each other’s houses and reshot some of the scenes with a different source of artificial light. We brought wireless light sources to manipulate the camera quality. In doing so the camera quality improved vastly. We did not have to reshoot Madison’s scenes as hers were good. Our film looks much cleaner now.

Filming - Wrapping it up

Today is March 12, 2020. We are currently piecing together the footage we have collected over the past few weeks. The last date we filmed was on Tuesday. We filmed scenes six through ten. We used our spare time after school. Madison ended up driving us to our filming locations. Our first filming location was an elementary school nearby. Weeks prior to filming we made sure we were granted permission to film on the school's grounds. There we filmed the end of the film where we all meet up for school as well as our own individual entrances into the scene. It was funny watching some of the shots we took because they were over-exaggerated but in a comedic way. Our comedy is genre after all. Afterward we headed to the bus stop across the school to film the bus scene. This is where Darren misses his bus for school. We were so glad that while we were filming the bus actually came. We had to act quickly. Madison quickly grabbed her phone and started filming. Darren then started to run after the bus as soon as it started to take off. That is how we ended up getting our bus chase shot. Afterwards we sent each other the footage from that day. We went home and started adding the new footage to the film. We just need to add some final touches.

Filming Continued

Today is March 9th, 2020. We have participated in another day of filming. We developed a systematic pattern of working. First, we figure out which days are most convenient to our group members by referring to our past schedule plan as well actively having discussions. If no date can be found we make sure to compromise. Compromise, I found, to be a large component of working in a group. I am sure it has greatly boosted our ability to work as a group. Today we worked after school. School let out at 2:40 and we got to my house around 3:10. I live fairly close to the school so that helped in managing time.  We drove to my house to finish up the last scenes that pertain to my segment of scenes one through five. Referencing back to our storyboards we were able to follow a consistent plan for our film. We made sure to take several shots of my scenes. This way when Madison would go home since she wasn't working she could review the footage. Since we were at my house we decided to just upload the files onto my computer since it was available us which I would use to review later as well. I made sure to give it to Darren as well to review when he got home from work. Because Darren takes the bus Madison drove him home. For the most part we did not experience any issues filming. At one point my curtain blocked proper lighting from the sun to come through so we had to clear. I made sure to tidy up our filming space to ensure we didn't get any unnecessary objects in our shot. For our next filming date we will be working on scenes six through ten. Over the past few days we have worked together we have acquired a sufficient amount of footage. Since we all three have the footage available we will continue our filming process. Over the next few days we are aiming to having a completed film.

Peer Review Sheet

"What is ONE thing you really liked about the film?"

I really enjoyed the story that the opening sequence told. I thought it was a unique take on a regular thriller movie. For being a high school film, I appreciate that they decided to tell a bold story because I know there could have been easier concepts to do.

"What is ONE suggestion you would make it the film?"
I would for the actors to speak a little louder. They need to project their voices more. When we were viewing their film at first it was a little difficult to understand from dialogue but clear from acting.

Peer Review

Today is Tuesday, May 3rd. We engaged in peer reviewing today. The task of peer reviewing was to review another groups film and have another group review us. Each of us put our film on a flash drive. The groups then would put the other groups flash drive into their computer to review  This way we could tell if we were on the right track or not. Each of the groups were given a paper with a number of requirements for the film. This included the necessary angles and titles. The group we reviewed had a good number of the requirement in their film. It is not expected for each film to be perfect because there is still time to work further on our film. We also got to write some feedback for the group we were reviewing. We included one thing we really liked about the film and one suggestion as well as how to improve the lighting and sound. The only issue with their film was that it was difficult to hear so we informed them to maybe project their voices a little louder. At the end of class we got the peer review paper back that was done on us. Here we got to view which requirements we have done and which ones were incomplete. From what we observed we still had a good deal of work to do. However, we were on the right track. We still need a bit more time to add the extra details. We have the majority of the scenes. We we just missing some of the titles and harder to get angles like the action match. The group who reviewed us said they liked our transitions. I agree with that statement because they appear clean and smooth when transitioning to each of our scenes in the film. Our film shows the morning routine of three very different teens getting ready for school so their a lot of back to back transitions throughout the duration of the film. They told us however we need to add diagetic and non diagetic sound. We will get on to this as soon as we can. For today we only had music as the sound for the film.

Filming Blog The Third Day

After filming earlier in the week we have moved to filming our other group members scenes. This time we decided to film on the weekday of February 26th. We found this to be a more convenient time revolving around all of our schedules considering I have places to go with my parents on weekends. Madison's work schedule also varies a lot. Darren felt it was a good day for him as well. So, after school Madison drove us to Darren's house. It was his turn to be filmed for scenes one through five. We decided on doing Darren this time because it would be more convenient for Madison since she and Darren live near each other. Therefore, after filming it wouldn't be a long way away to go home. Madison was our only way of transportation because me and Darren did not have cars of our own. It would also be inconvenient for our workiw I ng parents to come pick us up. The commute to Madisons house was about half an hour. When we got to Darren's house we decided to switch roles in filming. We thought it would be interesting if instead of Madison did the filming of these scenes because only me and Darren have been filming so far. Madison caught on to the filming process quickly and had a good understanding of how to work the camera. To continue along our plan, we decided to reference back to our planned angels and camera movements that we decided upon earlier before filming. At the end, we gave the camera to Madison. She was responsible for the SD card which she would use to dump onto her laptop when she got home. Later on when it would be time to edit, all of our footage would be placed in one location making everything easy to access. Overall, filming on Thursday was successful. We filmed what we aimed to finish. We came across little to no problems and look forward to finishing the rest of the scenes.

Filming Blog The Second Day

This weekend me and my group members filmed at one of our houses. Filming took place on February 23rd, 2020. We were filming her part of the movie. We didn't start filming until four thirty because she did not get off of work til four. Filming only took around half an hour. This was much shorter than we expected. It was good however because we had time to go home, eat dinner, and finish our school work. We prepared all of our equipment before hand. This included charging the camera before hand and knowing how to use the equipment before hand. This is important because last class one of our group members actually cut his hand a little bit while trying to open up the tri-pod because he didn't know how to properly work it before. Now that we took the time to familiarize ourselves we did not have any issues during the filming process. Me and my other group member filmed the group member whose house we were at. We finished getting her part of scenes one through five. This included the part where everyone is waking up and getting out of bed. In this case our actor had to clumsily roll out of bed and fall off. We had to re-shoot the shots of her rolling out of bed because she kept laughing. It was pretty amusing filming because we've never acted before and our acting skills were put to the test.We filmed multiple shots of her doing each of the frames on our planning sheet. The planning sheet was a good outline for what we wanted to do. We also had shots that included her pets. They wanted to play so at the beginning we could not get very clear shots of them. Then we gave them treats to help them settle down for the camera.

Filming Blog

Today is February 20th, 2020. Currently my group members and I have not started filming. This has proven to be a difficult task for us to arrange. We are all busy people and have extracurricular activities to do or jobs. Something we all have to do is our homework. One of my group members stays after school for Chess Club. I stay after school for environmental and my other group members has two jobs. All of these activities happening on different dates and different times has made it tricky finding a day we can all film together according to everyone’s schedule. We have found that some of the dates on our schedules collide. The first day we all plan to film is February the 22nd, 2020. This date was suggested by one of our group members because everyone necessary for the filming process will be available. Since filming will take place in the morning everyone will have a few hours to spare before continuing on the activities they will do throughout the day. Our goal is to be able to film scenes one through five. A different approach will be taken however to make our filming process easier. Also with a smaller chance of needing a reshoot. We will however only film the parts one of our group members is in. We figured that if we go to their house one day and get all of their scenes done then it will be more efficient. We live pretty far distances from each other. We will save less time and won’t waste gas having to travel back and fourth to each other’s homes. The scenes all start out at each other’s homes so we plan to film each group member individually on the days that we film.  Filming by this method also allows us to ensure we have all the footage needed and we can reshoot if needed. If we went from one house to another and realized needed to reshoot something from the house we just left it would take a big toll on our filming process. Scene one includes a zoom in of the alarm clock with the sound of it going off. Scene two includes my group member getting out of bed then walking to their bathroom. Scene three includes them trying to brush their teeth. Scene four includes them walking back to their room, attempting to dress themselves. Scene five shows them walking to their kitchen and saying hello to their pets. This picture provided is the setting for where some of these scenes will be taking place. They are my group members bedroom and is where they will be filmed waking up from.

Storyboard

We have finally came to the storyboard stage. In this stage, it all about the entire planning and guideline for every scenes in our opening. The storyboard is very important as not only is it a guideline for our script but it keeps us in check. We tried to be as specific as possible in our storyboard so we can mimic the storyboard as accurate as possible. My group is aware that there may be some additional scenes or new additional movements that may not be seen on the storyboard. This is very common as the storyboard serves as a guideline of what should be happening in each scenes. Since there was so many scenes in our opening and we had limited time, my group decided to assign each member to a specific set of scenes so we are able to get it done in a timely manner. Overall, all the scenes came out very nice and as expected. As some may not be as good as a artist as others, we were still able to tell what going on in each scene box as captions of the pictures are also provided below. We will be looking at this storyboard very time we film each scene so we know what is happening in each scenes. My group is very excited to begin our filming journey in the incoming days.

Planning Blog : Location, Participants, Health, Schedule

For this blog we planned out the entire process of production for our film. It took a little while because had to ask for permission from our parents and administrative authority. Here we decided on our set locations, who would be participating in our film, health and safety concerns and a schedule which would work for us. It was very important for us to decide on a set schedule because this is what would allow us to construct our film. We discussed job dates, appointments, family plans and other reasons we would not be able to film and chose days which we practical and convenient to everyone. We also assured that throughout the filming process we were secure of our health and safety and relied on the support of trusted adults for monitoring us. For our locations we decided to film at our own houses because it was convenient since we had ownership to it and did not have to worry about asking for permission to film. We could use anything as props because they belonged to us. For our school we made sure to get permission from administration and for the bus stop we thought it was a good location since it was not private property and could be filmed on freely. Discussing these factors with my group assures us that we will run on schedule with plenty of time to make mistakes, fix them and adjust our film to make it the best it can be.

Planning Blog : Title Design

For this blog we figured out our titles. This was a difficult and exhausting task because we couldn't make up our minds. Each of us wanted to be something that collided with one another. For example, two of us wanted to be producers or directors. We finally sorted everything out and came to a conclusion. For our titles we just provided the basic musts for a film. This included directed by, produced by and edited by. For our font we chose to go with something that can be taken lightly. Rather than something that is bold and harsh because that's not what the film is about. We chose it to fly onto the screen because we thought it would add a little touch of playfulness into it instead of it just appearing onto the screen.

Planning blog : sound script

In these slides, it contains all the sounds and the dialogue that will be heard in our movie opening. The majority of our opening scenes will just be natural sounds rather than dialogue because there is barely any characters interactions. The opening of our movie mostly take place in each of the character's house and they are beginning their morning routine to prepare for school. Therefore, most of the sounds will begin from the alarm clock ringing next to each of the character's bed to the sound of running water as some starts brushing their teeth or taking a shower before getting dressed from school. Then, then the sounds of the opening will transition onto the outside streets as the character's begins heading out. So the noises of cars zooming by and the sounds of chattering students as they reach school campus will be heard in the background once they reach school campus. Dialogue will be heard between the characters as they began to see each other at the end of the opening of the movie since they begin meeting each other at school. So overall, that the entire sound script for the entire opening of the movie. There will be natural sounds and dialogue throughout the opening of the movie. There may be some additional sounds along the opening as the script is not completely accurate but the group will be sure to follow the script as much as possible.

Planning Blog : Shooting Script

This is my groups shooting script for our final task. It is an outline what we will be done in our video. The script is divided by scene. We decided to include the shots so we would be better prepared when it came time for filming. During the time we were writing our script, my group and I were collecting props for the project. We were discussing how we would make it all come together. We still haven't decided when we are going to film. We still need to find out when all of us can find a day in which we can shoot the video. We will be focused on getting our scripts done so we have a sense of direction. By the end of this week we hope to get permission to film on our desired location.

Title Research : Dunya and Desi

In the beginning sequence of the film Dunya and Desi there twenty-one titles displayed. The story revolves around two eighteen-year-old best friends who are experiencing their own personal crises which leads them to the same country on their own adventures. There is a pattern of feminine and girl imagines prioritized in the opening sequence. There are female products scattered all over the opening credits such as makeup, magazines and other miscellaneous items that would be found in a young women's room. This is likely representative of their age and signifies that they are still young and growing because it looks significantly of how an older women's room would look. There are also several photos showcased of Dunya and Desi. Many of their photos together are prioritized in the opening sequence because their friendship is what drives the plot. It is important to the development of the story line. The images are directly connotative in showing the audience that Dunya and Desi are best friends who play a big role in each others lives and that they are still maturing and growing together. The genre of the film is comedy. The messy and unorganized images can reinforce comedy. As compared to a horror or thriller the opening sequence is very playful and all over the place. To make its appeal to its target audience it creates a disorganized sequence which many people can relate to and find amusing. People are often satisfied when plot lines and characters are realistic and relate able to it's audience. The opening sequence was done with real props and a camera. This allows for traditional camera work such as zoom ins and zoom outs. The role of the movements in the opening sequence are to show off the titles. I think it was very clever for the designers to fit the names of the titles into objects in the room. The camera does a good job making sure that the titles are visible and stand out even though that they disorganized a bunch of other objects but focusing on the titles and making them stand out from everything else.

Title Research : Eva

During the opening sequence of the film there are titles displayed eighteen.  The movie Eva is about a programmer named Alex. He returns to his home town after ten years to work on a robot boy. He uses his ten year old niece, Eva, as his muse and inspiration. The opening sequence shows many images and varying perspectives of design. They are meant to mimic the behavior of interconnected elements inside a neural network. There is incredible detail in the images. Soon the neural elements start to transform into mechanical looking tools and objects representing the elements of the robotic child. The visuals of the neural network and the mechanical objects are connotative of the elements of the a robotic being. They do not contain the spiritual and emotional elements which make up the human brain. That is why the neural networks in the opening sequences develop into machinery. Through this the genre is also reinforced. Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction that typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as this one which would be advanced science and technology. The extremely delicate and intricate visuals show ideas which are far beyond our modern day technological platforms. To ensure it is appealing to the right audience the title sequence uses technology in motion demonstrating the futuristic elements of the genre. Through delicate and intricate details of the title sequence were made possibly through 3-D animation. This is a useful form of animation because it allows for movie designers to reproduce something that can not be produced in real life or would be to difficult to reproduce. 3-D animation is also used for efficiency. Sometimes designers find it quicker, cheaper and more practical to produce designs through technological platforms. With the use of technology the designers were also able to capture obscure angles and camera movements. Computer animation can also be more versatile when capturing certain views of something because their are no restrictions such as those found in real life. As a result their is a variation of close-ups, zooms, pans, and tilts which are produced from computer software are created. This can be used to enforce anticipation and excitement while also foreshadowing parts of the film or the main story line.

Title research : Austin Powers

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?
The movie The Final Destination was the second movie we chose to research. There was a total of 21 titles displayed throughout the 1 minute and 29 seconds. We found this beginning sequence on watchthetitles.com

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The whole beginning sequence of the movie is based on humans getting killed in different ways. In the beginning the director uses an x-ray kind of vision to show the animations. He or she displays humans getting killed in multiple ways. It ranges from a person getting nails stuck in their head to someones head getting sliced open vertically. For the animations it's not always a whole persons skeleton being killed. The director uses blood splatter to represent a person being killed. For example, there's a scene in the beginning sequence where a train is coming and the audience can assume it hit a person because what followed was blood splatter coming toward the screen.

What connotations do the images carry?
The connotations of the images show that the movie following it is going to be scary or about death. The images show something that people are scared of which is death. This means the beginning sequence makes the audience feel scared or anxious.

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?
The animations shown in the beginning sequence reinforces the genre through symbolic codes.
The images in the beginning give people that scared feeling which reinforces the genre. The director  made sure to include animations that go with the movie because it would not enforce the genre whatsoever if they showed animations of bunny rabbits in the beginning sequence.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to it's target audience?
The target audience for The Final Destination is anyone that is ages 16 and up. The movie leans toward people that enjoy scary or gory movies. The animations of people dying help to keep the audience engaged or actually want to see the movie.

How has technology been used effectively?
A bunch of different angles have been used in the beginning sequence which helps keep it less boring which will in-turn keep the audience entertained. The art of animation has also been effectively used. This got the point that the movie will be gory an scary across without it being too gory. Editing was a good part of the beginning sequence because it goes hand and hand with the animation. This just made the sequence more appealing.

Title research : Watch the titles

For this website, we chose the title page named, “The Snow White and the Huntsman”.  In this title page, it quite basic as there is not much but just the whole name of the movie in bold black print. The background consists of a winter theme background as to resemble the winter theme since the movie is about Snow White. The title announces the identifier of your screenplay — no different than your given name that people use to refer to you. It’s important because a great title is also a key marketing factor of your script. It can win someone over right away or turn them off instantly. Not only that, a title page is important as it also gives many of the general information behind the film.
The general information that goes along with that title, including the name of the writer(s) involved, their representation, and their contact number, are essential for networking and contact information. This way, viewers get a sense of who created the films and who the movie was written and acted by. Speaking on the main title page, my group would create a more vivid and colorful title page so it can catch the viewers attention better.

Title Research : Art of the title

In this title page named the "Carnival Row", it portrays the whole text of the movie across the screen. The background resembles a temple and it seems like a fairy shape right above the text. Titles play an important role in the marketing, reception, and even understanding of a film – they are often the first piece of information that a viewer is given. Since a title needs to be appealing, memorable, original, and encapsulating all at once, a good title can be hard to come by. Watching this title page, it attracts to the viewers which is very important as you want a attractive title page so it gets the viewers attention. Since we are creating a movie, we wanted to create a similar title page where we would have the name of our movie spread across the screen and we would have a related background in the back of our title. There were many other title pages on this website that appealed to my group but we still instead to decided to go with this one instead. The bold lettering and the dark background made our eyes catch right into the title. This is what we would like when we create our own title page for our own movie. We would want the viewer to understand what we will be portraying in our movie. We want the viewers to have a glimpse of what our movie will be about.
